I'm sitting here contemplating what exactly do I want to articulate to my readers right now ( yeah all 10 of them I bet!). In comes a song that continues to play in my head. The song is by The Clash. "Should I stay or should I go?" Aside from thinking "what an awesome band they were, I'm picturing their words in a different light.
How exactly? Glad you asked! COVID 19 is really getting me down! Life has changed as we know it, society has changed, the community has changed, people have changed. I have changed. Sometimes when I visit a restaurant now. the song from The Clash plays in my mind! Aside from that though, I'm often faced with the question of " Should I stay or should I go?" when I'm faced with difficulties. There is the whole "Fight or Flight" response we are all faced with when facing uncertainty, hardship, and trials. Difficult situations confront us daily. Decisions must be made...sometimes life-changing decisions that take us down roads we never anticipated. Do we stay in the same place or do we chose to ride it out and go to another? Do I stay in my safe, secure same place and retreat into my old way of thinking? Or, do I go to a new, unexplored emotional landscape by breaking with old mental habits and learn new behaviors.
We Chose to Grow Through What We Go Through
Let's face it...2020 so far has been a turbulent year with no real end in sight! We are facing challenges unprecedented in my lifetime! I lost a family member, was laid off from a job, now I'm returning but the exposure to the virus is very high and I'm considered high risk. In today's highly sensitive culture, what we say can offend someone very easily so there is the stress each day of how we communicate. The economy is fragile and we just don't know how much we can trust those in the leadership of our states and nation.
We are all in this together...we are all going through this together, but we may not all grow through this together. In order to move beyond the "staying" mindset, we must choose to mentally grow through what we are going through. 2020 will pass in six months. At the end of the year ask yourself...what kind of person do I want to emerge as after this crisis is over?
